The US military is facing mounting pressure on its weapons stockpiles as the war with Iran continues, according to a report by The Washington Post.
The newspaper reported that the military is experiencing shortages of key air defense systems and long-range precision munitions after months of intensive operations.
A US official told the publication that the US “does not have enough to safely sustain operations”.
According to intelligence assessments referenced in the report, Iran has retained most of the missile arsenal it possessed before the war, while the Pentagon has rapidly depleted billions of dollars’ worth of precision-guided weapons and interceptors during the campaign.
The mismatch between Iran’s remaining missile inventory and the US rate of munitions consumption has intensified concerns within Washington over the sustainability of future military operations.
The war has also placed additional strain on the US defense industrial base, which has faced increasing demand in recent years due to continued military support for Ukraine, commitments in the Indo-Pacific, and operations across the Middle East.
US officials have repeatedly acknowledged the need to expand domestic weapons production to replenish inventories of advanced missiles.
The Pentagon has not publicly confirmed the specific stockpile figures.
