A potential milk shortage looms over Karachi after a strike by fodder dealers disrupted the supply of animal feed, ARY News reported on Wednesday.
The Dairy Farmers Association has written to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Secretary, the Karachi Commissioner, and the Inspector General of Sindh, seeking urgent intervention.
According to the association, fodder transportation from Sindh and Balochistan has remained suspended since July 20, triggering a severe shortage of livestock feed.
Association representative Shaukat Mukhtar warned that Karachi could face a scarcity of milk and other dairy products if the disruption persists.
He urged authorities to immediately restore fodder supplies, cautioning that failure to act could lead to serious nutritional challenges for livestock across the city.
The crisis follows a Rs20 per litre increase in milk prices earlier in March, when the Karachi Commissioner issued an official notification setting the dairy farmer price at Rs215 per litre, the wholesale price at Rs225 per litre, and the retail price at Rs240 per litre.
The hike came after a meeting between Commissioner Hassan Naqvi and a delegation of dairy farmers.
Shabbir Dar, a spokesperson for the dairy farmers, said at the time that skyrocketing production costs had made it unsustainable for farmers to sell milk at previous rates.
The current fodder disruption now threatens to compound those pressures and further strain Karachi’s dairy supply.
