Karachi’s University Road could turn into “a disaster waiting to happen” if heavy monsoon rains hit before ongoing infrastructure projects are completed, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town Chairman Dr. Fawad Ahmed has warned.
Addressing a press conference at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town Municipal Corporation council hall, Dr. Ahmed raised concerns over delays in rebuilding the section between Hassan Square and Nipa.
He said excavation carried out for the Red Line BRT project has left the road filled with pits, making it dangerous for commuters, particularly during the rainy season.
The town chairman also opposed the proposed flyover near Disco Bakery, calling it unnecessary and impractical. He argued that the project could worsen congestion instead of improving traffic flow, as much of the traffic from University Road has already been diverted to Shabbir Usmani Road.
Dr. Ahmed urged the provincial government to drop the flyover plan and focus on removing encroachments to ease traffic movement.
He added that the K-IV augmentation water supply line is also expected to pass through Shabbir Usmani Road, which would make construction of the flyover even more difficult. According to him, these concerns have already been shared with the Karachi mayor.
During the press conference, Dr. Ahmed also presented Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town’s performance report and announced a budget of Rs. 4.7795 billion for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
He said 75% of the total budget has been allocated to development projects.
