Karachi Transporters Extend Strike After Talks With Govt Fail

Karachi’s public transport strike will continue on Friday after negotiations between transporters and the Sindh government failed to resolve a dispute over electronic traffic challans.

The Karachi Transport Alliance announced the extension of the strike following unsuccessful talks with provincial authorities. Public transport services across the city remained largely suspended on Thursday as transport operators observed a wheel-jam strike, disrupting travel for thousands of commuters.

Buses, minibuses and coaches stayed off the roads, affecting residents who rely on public transport for daily travel to workplaces, offices and industrial areas.

Karachi Transport Alliance President Haji Tawab Khan said discussions with the government did not produce any significant outcome, prompting transporters to continue the shutdown.

Transporters say the strike was called over concerns regarding the e-challan system, arguing that the fines imposed under the mechanism are excessively high and, in many cases, exceed their earnings. The alliance has maintained that public transport services will remain suspended until their concerns are addressed.
