Traffic-related fatalities in Karachi have declined by nearly 30 percent over the past six months following the introduction of modern traffic monitoring and management measures, according to DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah.
Speaking at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Shah said 308 fatal traffic accidents were recorded during the period this year, compared to 447 during the same period last year.
He said serious injury cases also dropped from 806 to 569, while deaths involving heavy vehicles fell from 155 to 75.
According to the DIG, traffic monitoring is currently being carried out through 1,300 surveillance cameras across the city, with plans to install an additional 2,250 cameras in the next phase.
Shah said the Traffic Police has also established a Traffic Flow Unit and a Traffic Drone Unit to improve traffic management.
He reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against underage driving and said the minimum fine for motorcycle violations is Rs. 2,500.
The DIG added that encroachments and illegal parking remain major causes of traffic congestion, with authorities identifying 34 key traffic bottlenecks across Karachi for targeted action.
