More than 1,400 Pakistani medical graduates secured placements in United States residency programs in 2026, according to the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
PMDC described the result as a major achievement for Pakistan’s medical education sector. It said the number reflected the growing competitiveness of Pakistani doctors seeking postgraduate clinical training abroad.
PMDC Credits Students and Medical Institutions
PMDC President congratulated the successful graduates.
He said their performance reflected the collective efforts of medical students, teachers, institutions, and regulators working to improve medical education standards in Pakistan.
The council also presented the placements as evidence that Pakistani graduates can compete successfully in international licensing and residency pathways.
Reported Number Rises From 2025
PMDC had previously reported that 1,061 Pakistani doctors obtained US residency positions in 2025.
The latest figure therefore represents an increase of at least 339 placements compared with the number announced by the council last year.
A medical residency provides supervised postgraduate training after graduation. Doctors usually train in a specific field, such as internal medicine, paediatrics, family medicine, surgery or psychiatry.
Applicants seeking residency positions in the US normally complete the required examinations and certification process before applying to programs and participating in the National Resident Matching Program.
International Graduates Filled Thousands of US Positions
Official US data shows that international medical graduates continued to play a major role in the 2026 residency match.
A total of 9,682 international medical graduates matched into first-year residency positions. This included 2,949 US citizens who studied medicine internationally and 6,733 non-US citizen international graduates.
Overall, 38,354 applicants matched into first-year positions during the 2026 Main Residency Match. More than 44,000 training positions were offered across US residency programs.
