Federal Minister of Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, announced in a recent statement on X that the Pakistani government is building its own independent streaming platform similar to Netflix. This OTT platform will be used to showcase Pakistani content to a global audience.
The statement was shared yesterday, where the Minister announced that the Pakistani government is in talks with Netflix and other “major OTT platforms” to introduce Pakistani content on their services. The Minister did not clarify which other streaming platforms are involved in the talks, but global major names include Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Max, Apple TV, etc.
If Pakistan gets its own independent version of Netflix, it is unclear whether it will only show Pakistani content or also introduce global content as part of its services. However, the statement makes it clear that the Pakistani Netflix will show its content to a global audience.
It is also unclear which content will be shown in Pakistan’s version of Netflix, whether it will be movies, TV shows, dramas, game shows, talk shows, or all of the above.
But one thing is clear. A Pakistani version of Netflix will only work if it offers cheaper subscription plans than Netflix itself, especially if Netflix also agrees to add Pakistani content to its platform after its talks with the government.
We don’t have a name for the platform just yet, or when it will be released to the public.
