Netflix has introduced another change that could further limit account and password sharing by requiring a separate email address for each profile.
The move comes three years after the streaming company began taking stronger action against users sharing accounts outside their households.
New Email Requirement
Some Netflix users began receiving on-screen notices earlier this month asking them to connect a unique email address to their profiles.
The notices presented the change as a way to access additional features, including easier sign-ins and more personalized recommendations.
However, users who shared screenshots on Reddit noted that the requirement appeared on accounts containing multiple profiles within the same household.
Netflix later confirmed that it began requiring a separate email address for every profile on June 15.
How It Works
According to Netflix’s help page, users can add an email address by opening the Profiles section under their account settings.
After adding an email, the profile holder can use it to log in to the Netflix account, switch to any profile, and adjust the settings of their own profile.
Kids Profiles Excluded
The new login option does not apply to profiles created for children.
Netflix says email addresses cannot be connected to Kids profiles, meaning children cannot use those profiles to sign in to the service directly.
Extra Profiles Could Become Harder to Manage
The requirement may create difficulties for users who maintain additional profiles for reasons other than sharing an account with another person.
Some users create separate profiles to keep viewing recommendations for different types of content apart. For example, a person may use one profile only for anime to prevent those viewing habits from affecting recommendations on their main profile.
Such users may now need to create multiple email addresses to continue maintaining separate profiles in this way.
Netflix reported earlier this year that it had 325 million paying customers worldwide.
