CDA Approves Feasibility Study for Islamabad Electric Tram Project

The Capital Development Authority has decided to conduct a feasibility study for an electric tram project in Islamabad as part of efforts to promote a modern and environmentally friendly public transport system in the federal capital.

The decision was made during a meeting held on Wednesday at the CDA Headquarters, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Participants discussed the practical implementation and infrastructure requirements for electric tram and electric bus projects in Islamabad.

The meeting agreed to initiate a feasibility study for the electric tram project at the earliest. Under the proposed project, the electric tram system will include depots, parking facilities, charging infrastructure, and modern maintenance services.

The project will be implemented in line with an Intelligent Transport System framework and will be developed as a fully modern, comfortable, and environmentally friendly transport solution. Authorities also plan to integrate the tram with existing and future transit systems.

Chairman CDA directed that the entire system should be fully digital and cashless. He also instructed that the planning phase should ensure the inclusion of carbon credit mechanisms as part of the environmentally friendly transport initiative.

He further directed that the feasibility study should examine linking the electric tram project with key locations in Islamabad, particularly the Islamabad International Airport. He emphasized that the study should be based on updated ridership data and future demand projections.
