North Korea has made bizarre claims that the father of Kim Jong-un invented burritos back in 2011. Even though the country is facing food shortages, the sales of this ‘Western dish’ are increasing.
According to a report made by the state’s newspaper, Kim Jong-un’s father, Kim Jong Il, was the one who came up with the idea of the Tex-Mex. However, shortly after this, he had suffered a fatal heart attack.
This is how the story unfolds
This outrageous claim of Kim Jong Il inventing burritos is followed by an equally wild story. That Kim Jong Il had previously come up with a dish known as ‘Double Bread with Meat’ which has an uncanny resemblance to hamburgers. Meanwhile, Tex Mex, commonly known as burritos, are called ‘wheat wraps’. A TV news footage shows North Koreans consuming these wheat wraps at a food stall outside the Kumsong Food Factory located in the capital Pyongyang. The footage also previewed a picture of Kim Jong Il standing in a burrito station.

While the news footage painted a colorful picture of streets filled with food, those who have secretly escaped North Korea denied these claims. They said that their country fellows couldn’t afford or even dream of these meals. Therefore, these dishes are virtually non-existent there.
Hyun-Seung Lee, who was born into an elite North Korean family but fled the country in 2014, said in an interview:
I have never seen any burritos or wraps on sale in North Korea. The penetration rate of Western food in North Korea is extremely low, because there are very few restaurants where you can eat it and the food ingredients are not diverse.
The state’s newspaper further claims that Jong Il’s son, Kim Jung Un, is now following in the footsteps of his late father by developing a “meticulous interest” in the dish.
The despot advises his men that the ‘wheat wraps’ are best accompanied by mineral water in the summer and hot tea in the winter, added the newspaper. There are some striking similarities between the North Korean Burrito and the “Western” Burrito. For instance, the Pyongyang ‘wheat wrap’ features some sort of doner meat along with a mix of cabbage and carrot.

Here’s what people have to say about these outrageous claims made by North Korea.
Aside from the bizarre claims, North Koreans face a major problem of food shortage. Even Kim Jong-un acknowledged the situation as “tense” and brought attention to the “food shortage” situation.
