The Multinational consumer brands in India faced social media backlash over tweets and Facebook posts sent out by their dealers and outlets in Pakistan for supporting “Kashmir Solidarity Day”. After the automobile manufacturers, Hyundai and Kia Motors drew flak in India, the American Food Chain KFC was criticized for supporting Kashmir’s right to freedom.
Hundreds of Indian social media users called out to boycott KFC in India for its social posts supporting Kashmir Solidarity Day. “Boycott KFC” began trending on Twitter over a tweet posted last year by KFC Pakistan in support of Kashmiris. The tweet said, “The cravings for freedom are heartfelt”. Similarly, a Facebook post by KFC Pakistan showed its support to the separatists in Kashmir. “Kashmir belongs to Kashmiris,” it said. It is important to mention that Pakistan observes Kashmir Solidarity Day on 5th February annually. On this day, Pakistan shows its support and unity with the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Indian Social Media Backlash
This year several multinational consumer brands faced backlash from Indian social media users over Kashmir solidarity posts made by outlets in Pakistan. While this year the automobile dealers in Pakistan showed their solidarity with Kashmir, KFC Pakistan, however, did not. But the Indian Social media users still called out for a boycott of KFC as the old tweet resurfaced. The popular American food chain received a lot of hate over its pro-Pakistan stand on Kashmir.
A Twitter user vowed to not spend any more money on the American fast-food chain over its Kashmir Solidarity post. “Not gonna spend money on KFC India for their ‘liberate Kashmir’ posts,” said the user. Another user expressed his dismay by tweeting “KFC doesn’t think Kashmir is India’s integral part. We make sure that it won’t be part of the Indian Market. Boycott KFC India.”
After the old post went viral, KFC India issued a statement apologizing for the post made by KFC Pakistan. Taking to Twitter, KFC India wrote, “We deeply apologize for a post that was published on some KFC social media channels outside the country. We honor and respect India, and remain steadfast in our commitment to serving all Indians with pride.”
Kashmir Solidarity Day
Pakistan has been observing Kashmir Solidarity Day for the past 33 years. We have always been steadfast in extending our support to the Kashmiris. Even the Multinational Companies in Pakistan send loud and clear solidarity messages to the Kashmiris that Pakistan firmly stands with them.
