Mobile Food Testing Laboratories Launched In Seven Divisions Of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)

On Wednesday, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Food Minister, Atif Khan, inaugurated Mobile Food Testing Laboratories for the seven divisional headquarters of the province. In March 2021, the provincial health department approved the plan for setting up food testing laboratories in KP. A year later, the mobile laboratories were launched, the ceremony of which took place in the food department. While addressing the event, the food minister said that the mobile food testing labs will ensure the provision of safe and healthy food to the people in a more productive way. He further added, after the divisional level, the mobile labs will be extended to the other districts of the province.

“The mobile food testing laboratories are equipped with high-tech equipment, which covers a range of food tests, including the testing of milk, flour, edible oil, ghee, water, and other food items on the spot,” he said.

Director-General of food safety authority, Shah Rukh Ali Khan, country director of Nutrition International, Shabina Raza, and Secretary food department, Mushtaq Ahmad, are among the notable ones who attended the inaugural event.

The food minister also informed that a monitoring mechanism is installed to maintain transparency of the system. The database will receive all the samples collected during the inspections. This will keep track of both the vendor and the officials. Moreover, mobile food testing laboratories can lead to improving the overall quality of the food items available in the market. Thereby, reducing the burden on the health sector. Hence, these food testing laboratories hold great importance in the elimination of adulteration in the food sector.

Furthermore, the officials are instructed to inspect canteens of various public and private hospitals. The provincial minister commended the Food Safety Authority for the timely completion and launch of the project. According to Secretary Food, Mushtaq Ahmad, the food laboratories will test food samples from different districts, free of cost, as a part of a special work plan. He also appreciated the food minister for the follow-ups in the establishment of food laboratories.
