I think we can all agree that no food comes close to the food of Lahore. Whether it’s tikka, gol gappay, or Falooda, Lahore is literally the top-notch haven of marvelous food. With that being said, I was visiting a friend a couple of months back when he mentioned a falooda place located at M.M. Alam Road.

I was enthralled by his love for this specific falooda and I knew in that moment that I can’t go back without trying it. For all of you who don’t know, falooda is a textured, cold snack or dessert that is often disguised as a beverage. It consists of silky vermicelli noodles placed on top of kulfi (ice cream) and some people prefer it with rose-flavored syrup and nuts spread over.

Rendering my experience, falooda on a sunny evening is a great mood enhancer. When you take a spool that has all of the ingredients of falooda, it hits right in the feels. It feels right. You name a dish that is smooth, cool, refreshing, velvety, crunchy & sweet. I will wait.

History of Falooda:

Although falooda has many historical stories, people often recognize it as one of the dishes that date back to the Mughal Empire. Storytellers mention that faluda was Jahangir’s favorite dessert and it was portrayed as a rich jelly-like drink made from the straining of boiled wheat mixed with fruit juices and cream. Others mention that a famous Iranian ruler, Nadir Shah introduced this dish in India when he came.

Whatever the origin is, this sweet dessert is an indication of delicacy and royalty. Soon after, this dish became very famous in India and was altered into something more exciting i.e. the falooda of today. I don’t know about you guys but this is the best transformation story I have heard my entire life.

Versions of Falooda:

Happiness does come in different favors and servings. While the foundation of falooda remains the same throughout, some modifications can change the taste completely. The base usually consists of milk, ice-cream, and chia seeds. What makes it different is special syrups to stir specific flavors. Anyway, the different types include:

Rose Falooda

Rose is famous for being a good source of freshening on warm-summer days. Rose falooda is the most famous type of falooda and is easily available throughout Pakistan. It is the most traditional form of falooda and its colorful appeal is very tempting.

It is often garnished with rose petals and rose water. Ice cream balances the over-powering taste and fragrance of rose making it a perfect dessert in a glass. It is recommended to soak chia seeds in water for 40 minutes before preparing rose falooda.

Jelly Falooda

Every meal should end with something sweet. Sometimes it can be peanut butter jelly while other times it can be jelly in falooda. Adding jelly in any dessert makes it 100 times more interesting even if it’s ordinary falooda. It adds a very exceptional taste and enhances the texture of falooda that cannot be achieved in any other way. Jelly and Falooda are like Monica and Chandler; perfect for each other.

Mango Falooda

When people think about mangoes, they associate them with the idea of summers. What if I tell you that you can enjoy the amusing flavor of mangoes and falooda, in one bowl? I like my mango falooda with mango pulp and freshly chopped mango cubes. You can also make strawberry, banana, and apple falooda using the same idea.

Phirni Falooda

If you come from a very desi family, you can relate that special occasion only becomes special when phirni is served. For all my readers who don’t know, phirni is rice pudding. It is very creamy and rice and blends perfectly with different ingredients of falooda. Talking about texture alone, it is on another level of awesome. Soft vermicelli and rice grains make the dessert so irresistible that it finishes in seconds.

Calorie Count:

Falooda is very pretty to look at and it’s all because of its vibrant ingredients. Chia seeds in falooda have multiple health benefits. They are very nutritious, high in fiber, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids that are shocking, heart-healthy. One glass of Falooda provides about 15 percent of the total daily calorie requirement of a standard adult diet of 2,000 calories.

Although falooda is has a lot of calories, but its healthy ingredients make an exception. I would not recommend that you start having falooda every day, but once in a blue moon hurt nobody.
