60-Year-Old American Converts To Islam After Watching ‘Ertuğrul’

The elderly woman was inspired by the Islamic teachings of peace and justice

A 60-year-old American woman converted to Islam after binging the popular Turkish series Dirilis: Ertuğrul. The elderly woman from Wisconsin says she changed her name to Khadija following her conversion.

Popular Turkish series Dirilis: Ertugrul is not just a popular show in Pakistan but around the world as well. The show following the journey of Ertugrul Ghazi and the rise of the Ottoman Empire. The historical epic is successful due to its incredible cinematography, brilliant cast and touching representation of Islamic culture and ideals. The cast has become household names in Pakistan. However, one woman in Wisconsin is a huge fan of the show as well. Not only that, Dirilis: Ertuğrul inspired the elderly woman to accept the teachings of Islam.

Inspired by the show

60-year-old woman, who goes by the name Khadija following her conversion to Islam, says that she is inspired by the Islamic values of peace and justice.
“I looked into the details [of the show], it intrigued me so I started watching it, and from the first episode I was very interested,” she told a news outlet. “To live a life like that back then is very admirable.”
Khadija, shortly after her conversion, was able to find a mosque in her local town. While people admired her newfound love of Islamic teachings, Khadija still lives in a predominant Christian community. The 60-year-old’s neighbors were happy to help Khadija’s conversion to Islam.
“The people around me believe that I was brainwashed. I do not discuss this issue with people anymore. I do not interfere with their belief. They should not have any reason to interfere with me,” she said.
