A meeting of the Standing Committee of National Assembly on law and justice was held yesterday with Riaz Fatyana in chair. During the meeting another member of the lower house Bashir Virk questioned whether or not divorce happens if a person says “Talaaq” to his wife facetiously (as in a joke).
The Chairman of Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Dr Qibla Ayaz responded to the question, and said yes. He replied that even if a person uses the word ‘talaaq’ for his wife in jest, divorce will happen.

Make Triple Talaaq Punishable By Law
The CII also recommended to make the act of triple talaaq a punishable crime by law. Minister for Law Dr. Farogh Naseem stated that we have an example of the act of triple talaaq being punished by the state. The minister for law was referring to an incident where Hazrat Umar (RA) punished a couple of person for triple talaaq.
The Law Minister offered to make laws against the act of triple talaaq which was duly endorsed by the chairman of CII.
