As the world grieves over the death of an African American man, George Floyd, at the hands of the Minneapolis policemen, many celebrities and influential figures have spoken out on the matter of racial discrimination.
This also includes celebrities from other parts of the globe, who have also been quick to air their thoughts about the Black Lives Matter movement.
But is it enough? Or even right?
Let’s take the example of Pakistani and Indian celebrities who spoke out on the same issue. Some observers say that desi celebrities’ concerns about racism are hypocritical, to say the least. Why is that you ask? Celebrities like Zara Noor Abbas and Priyanka Chopra (to name a few) have nothing to say about the racism in their own countries.
Pakistani actress Ushna Shah pointed out why that is so. According to the Balaa actress, if anyone was to raise their voices for oppressed minorities in their own backyard, they would be deemed blasphemous, traitorous, and could also face calls for execution.
Here’s what she said:
Imagine if we were allowed to be this enraged for the minorities of our country. We can’t even take to the streets for them.. forget the establishment, our own fundos would label it heresy/blasphemy and execute us.

Many people supported her message:
Exactly! One of the best tweets I’ve seen on this matter. I’m amazed 2 c all this holier than thou attitude from some Pakistanis excoriating the US but fail 2 realize when Ahmadis/Shias r massacred – there r no talk shows discussing the matter, no protests, nada.Sounds of silence

One Twitter user pointed out that the involvement of the police in Floyd’s murder makes it a state-level injustice case, and that incidents of a similar nature do not happen in Pakistan.
There is whole long history of cruelty with the minorities in repeated public incidents where the state instituitions were involved like Police in US , Do u think in Pak minorities have gone through such state level injustices?
