If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s a chance of Back to the Future 4 happening, franchise co-creator Bob Gale has some very choice words for you.
Gale, who wrote and produced all three iconic Back to the Future films alongside director Robert Zemeckis, is done fielding questions about a fourth installment.
Gale made the blunt declaration backstage at the Saturn Awards, where he was honored with the George Pal Memorial Award. When asked (yet again) about the possibility of a fourth movie, Gale didn’t hold back. He had this to say:
People always say, ‘When are you going to do Back to the Future 4?’ and we say, ‘F— you’
While Gale has no interest in reviving the time-traveling adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown on the big screen, he pointed out that the franchise is far from dormant.
Back to the Future has already inspired a hit Broadway musical, which debuted in London’s West End before making its way to Broadway in August 2023.
The musical, which won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022, wrapped its Broadway run in January 2025 after over 500 performances and a whopping $80 million in ticket sales.
And the journey doesn’t stop there. The musical is set to embark on a global tour and will even have a stage production aboard Royal Caribbean Cruises. “My God, Back to the Future, I’m going to be doing it for the rest of my life,” Gale joked.
While fans won’t be getting a fourth movie, Gale did reveal an exciting new project: he’s helping franchise star Michael J. Fox write a book about his experience making the trilogy. Titled Future Boy, the book promises to offer a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most beloved film franchises of all time.
