In a jaw-dropping viral moment that looks straight out of the movie Jaws, a humpback whale swallowed a young kayaker off the coast of Chilean Patagonia, briefly trapping him in its mouth.
Adrián Simancas was enjoying a day on the water with his father, Dell Simancas, when the unexpected happened.
As they paddled through the Patagonian waters, a massive humpback whale surfaced right next to them. In a split second, the whale opened its mouth wide, and Adrián, along with his bright yellow kayak, was caught in the creature’s enormous maw for a few heart-stopping seconds.
Dell, who was just a few meters away, managed to capture the entire jaw-dropping moment on video while encouraging his son to stay calm.
“I thought it had eaten me and swallowed me,” Adrián later recounted, still in disbelief over the surreal experience. Thankfully, the whale quickly realized its mistake and released the young man unharmed, allowing him to paddle away with a story that would make anyone’s jaw drop.
The video, which has since gone viral, showcases the sheer size of the whale and the astonishment on Adrián’s face as he navigated this unexpected encounter. It’s a reminder of the wild and unpredictable nature of marine life, and how quickly things can change on the water.
Experts say that such encounters, while rare, can happen when whales are feeding. Humpback whales are known for their bubble-net feeding technique, where they create a wall of bubbles to trap fish.
