Actress Michelle Trachtenberg, best known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, has tragically passed away at the age of 39.
She was found unresponsive in her Manhattan apartment at One Columbus Place on Wednesday morning by her mother. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene after a 911 call reported cardiac arrest.
Sources suggest her body may have rejected a recent liver transplant, leading to her death from natural causes. The NYPD confirmed there were no signs of foul play, and the city’s medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
Trachtenberg, who rose to fame as a child star in Harriet the Spy (1996), had sparked health concerns in recent months. Fans noticed her frail appearance and jaundiced eyes in Instagram posts, prompting speculation about her well-being. In January 2024, she addressed the concerns, claiming she was “happy and healthy”.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Trachtenberg began her career at age 9 on Nickelodeon’s “The Adventures of Pete and Pete”. She later gained fame as Dawn Summers in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and as the manipulative Georgina Sparks in “Gossip Girl”.
Tributes have poured in from co-stars and fans. Rosie O’Donnell, her “Harriet the Spy” co-star, said, “Heartbreaking. I loved her very much. She struggled the last few years.” David Boreanaz called the news “horrible”, while Kim Cattrall shared a heartfelt post, writing, “Rest in peace, sweet Michelle.”
Trachtenberg is survived by her longtime boyfriend, Jay Cohen, a talent agent and producer. Her family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
