Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series. From Chris Pratt’s Starlord to Dave Batista’s Drax, we can’t imagine anyone else in these roles— even if it’s Vin Diesel as Groot!
The same goes for the “Most Dangerous Woman in the Universe,” aka Gamora. However, before Zoe Saldaña put on the green paint, Amanda Seyfried was director James Gunn’s first pick.
In a recent podcast, the Mean Girls star spilled the tea on why she turned down the role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy
Amanda Seyfried revealed that when director James Gunn offered her the role, she had a serious case of the jitters. “I mulled over the offer for a few days,” she admitted.
The thought of being stuck in a superhero suit for ages and possibly being “painted a different color” was enough to make her second-guess the whole thing. Plus, the idea of filming in London for a blockbuster was a bit daunting.
At the time, she had her sights set on a project with Seth MacFarlane called A Million Ways to Die in the West, which she thought was a better fit for her career. Ironically, that film ended up being a flop—talk about bad luck.
But it wasn’t just the logistics that scared her. Amanda Seyfried had some serious concerns about joining the Marvel universe. “Let’s also remember that being a part of the first Marvel movie that bombs ain’t good for your career,” she quipped. With a talking tree and a raccoon in the mix, she feared Guardians might just be that film.
Fast forward to today, and we all know Guardians of the Galaxy became a massive hit, raking in $773 million worldwide and launching a beloved franchise. Seyfried, however, stands by her decision, saying, “I was way too scared” but adds, “It was good for me then and it was good for me now.”
