US President Donald Trump wants to make “Hollywood great again,” declaring that movies made outside the United States will soon be slapped with a massive 100% tariff if they want to enter the American market.
The President claims the Hollywood industry is “dying a very fast death” and blames foreign countries for luring away filmmakers. He even called it a “National Security threat,” warning that foreign films are spreading “messaging and propaganda.”
Trump made his message his Truth Social platform clear :
WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!
The details are still murky. Trump hasn’t said if the new tax will hit American studios filming abroad—a common Hollywood trick to save money. Recent blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, Wicked, and Gladiator II were all shot outside the US.
Trump’s trade war has already rattled the world economy, with prices soaring and countries like China hitting back with their own tariffs. The movie business is just the latest battleground. China has already slashed the number of American films allowed in its cinemas, warning that US tariffs are turning audiences away from Hollywood.
With the US film industry’s spending down 26% last year and more productions heading overseas, Trump’s blockbuster tariff threat has left Hollywood—and the world—wondering what’s next. Will American audiences soon be paying double for their favorite foreign flicks? Or will Hollywood be forced to bring the cameras home?
