The highly anticipated third installment of Netflix’s Enola Holmes series has hit an unexpected snag, leaving fans and production teams reeling. The shoot for Enola Holmes 3, which began in mid-April 2025 at Shepperton Studios in London before moving to Malta for its final weeks, was abruptly paused after several cast and crew members, including lead actress Millie Bobby Brown, fell ill due to a suspected catering mishap.
The incident, reported by The Sun and other foreign media, has thrown the tightly packed 12-week filming schedule into disarray, raising concerns about meeting production deadlines. According to a source close to the production, the trouble began when multiple team members started feeling unwell during filming in Malta.
Enola Holmes 3, directed by Philip Barantini (Adolescence), is poised to be a darker, more ambitious chapter in the beloved mystery franchise, based on Nancy Springer’s The Enola Holmes Mysteries.
The film sees Millie Bobby Brown reprising her role as the sharp-witted Enola Holmes, Sherlock’s younger sister, alongside returning stars Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, Louis Partridge as Viscount Tewkesbury, and Himesh Patel as Dr. John Watson. The story, penned by Jack Thorne, follows Enola to Malta, where “personal and professional dreams collide on a case more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced before,” according to Netflix’s official synopsis.
The franchise has been a massive hit for Netflix, with the first film in 2020 drawing over 76 million households in its first month and the 2022 sequel earning praise for its blend of wit, adventure, and social commentary.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Enola’s next adventure, especially after the second film’s cliffhanger involving Sharon Duncan-Brewster’s Moriarty escaping prison. The promise of a deeper exploration of Enola’s relationship with Tewkesbury and a darker tone under Barantini’s direction has only heightened anticipation.
