Aagahi, A Public Awareness Series for Women Gets Shortlisted For Cannes Lions Festival

Two-time Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s ‘AAGAHI’ has been nominated for the 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Film-maker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s ‘AAGAHI’ is an awareness series. The title literally means awareness, in Urdu.

AAGHAHI is a four-part, public service campaign with an aim to educate women about their legal rights in Pakistan.

Whats Its About?

The film-maker released the series in 2018. The four-part series teaches women how to:

  • have an FIR registered;
  • report domestic violence;
  • file for divorce;
  • know their marriage certificate.

The four-part series has been nominated for the ‘Sustainable Development Goals Lions‘ in the ‘Gender Equality category‘, at the 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

AAGAHI is the first Pakistani awareness series to be nominated for Cannes Lions. The series will go against over 30,000 pieces of creative entries from 89 countries, in 27 distinct creative disciplines.

A jury of over 400 members, from over 50 countries, have now convened in Cannes to judge the work. Winners will be announced over the course of five evening Awards Shows.

More About AAGAHI

Animated short series AAGAHI educates women on Pakistani law on domestic violence, divorce, cyber crimes, and inheritance. It also guides them on how to lodge an FIR in case their legal rights are withheld.

“Aagahi is a campaign designed to create awareness in women so they are able to navigate the police and judicial system with confidence in Pakistan.

The impact created in rural and urban communities through AAGAHI has been tremendous and we at SOC Films are delighted to be shortlisted for the Cannes Sustainable Development Goals award.”

Cake movie-star Aamina Sheikh has narrated the series in Urdu. She explains every step of the process in an easy manner.

The four-part series was produced over a course of seven months by SOC Films in partnership with Women Action Forum.
