Abrar-ul-Haq’s Chamkeeli Faces Lawsuit for ‘Being Offensive’

Wait what?

Chamkeeli

Advocate Rana Adnan Asghar has filed a petition in a Lahore civil court to have Abrar-ul-Haq’a song ‘Chamkeeli‘ banned and taken off YouTube. The petitioner states the song is offensive to men and women.

Abrar-ul-Haq’s track ‘Chamkeeli‘ cast Mehwish Hayat as a kick-ass bride that won’t wait around for a guy to make the first move.

The lyrics of the song elaborate on changing gender roles. It calls for assertive women and compassionate men in this modern era. Apparently this is what made it ‘offensive’ to some people. Lets see what the Lahore civil court decides after hearing the petition.

What’s the controversy here?

It makes sense people may not like the progressive music video and lyrics of the song in our traditional society. Who hates it so much that they want it taken down from YouTube? Advocate Rana Adnan Asghar apparently.

“Men were humiliated by Abrar ul Haq on December 7… Not only men but women were also humiliated in the song,”

It seems progressive and fluid gender roles are too much to bear even in a fictional music video.  Civil Judge Ziaur Rahman sought responses from Abrar-ul-Haq, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and others in the case.

Court has been adjourned till December 21

Previously Abrar-ul-Haq’s Coke Studio rendition of ‘Billo De Ghar‘ was also taken down due to alleged copyright issues. While flagging content over copyrights makes sense, censorship of art over personal preferences does not.

Does the conflict more than meet the eye in the lawsuit against ‘Chamkeeli‘? Abrar-ul-Haq has yet to comment on the matter.
