Ahad Raza Mir made headlines with his performance in the play Hamlet: A Ghost Story with Calgary’s The Shakespeare Company.
Now the Yaqeen Ka Safar actor has been nominated for Calgary’s theatre accolade The Betty Mitchell Awards. Ahad Raza Mir has been nominated for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Actor’ in a Drama category.
The actor has a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts specializing in drama from the University of Calgary. Given that’s where he was raised, it makes sense that he went back to ground zero after finding success in Pakistan.
Ahad started his career with the theater company and worked with them for three years before they signed him as a lead in Hamlet.
The Betty Mitchell Awards
The 22nd Annual Betty Mitchell Awards released the list of 2018-19 nominees last week. Hamlet has also been nominated in the ‘Outstanding Sound Design or Composition’ category.
The 22nd Annual Betty Mitchell Awards will be held on June, 24, 2019.
Before Hamlet: A Ghost Story, Ahad Raza Mir won the award for ‘best actor in a musical’ at the Canadian Critics’ Awards.
His performance in Hamlet and Shakesperian theatre is on another level though.
“Hamlet is particularly an exhausting character. Once the show is over, the cast asks me if I want to hang out and I usually just refuse. I am so drained that all I want to do is sleep.”
Ahad Raza Mir has a lot of faith in his performance as the lead in the Shakespearian tragedy.
“My mother came to see me perform and she told me that for the first time, she couldn’t recognise me and actually felt scared of me. I just thought that I must be doing something right if my own mother could think that way!”
On the possibility of a special performance of Hamlet in Pakistan, Ahad said that he was willing to try.
“Let’s see. We could try, maybe.”
