In a civilized world, you expect better from the educated and artists. Yet while most of the entertainment fraternity are using their platform to inform and educate, Ahmed Ali Butt isn’t.

The comedy actor voiced opposition to the Aurat March slogan ‘Mera Jism Meri Marzi’, stating that it’s a Western slogan. The Fatman star says;

“the slogan is part of a Western campaign, and being exploited locally.”

The Jawani Phir Nahi Ani actor believes local women are exploiting this Western slogan aimed at legalizing prostitution.

Since when are female genital mutilation, child marriage, women trafficking, women access to medicare, sexual harassment, policing women’s clothing, career choices, educational access are not vices of society?

In his Instagram story, the actor addressed how the slogan goes against Pakistan’s cultural values.

He alleges that Aurat March is a  ‘foreign funded movement’, an accusation that is often leveled against progressive movements in a conservative Asian country like Pakistan.

“When it comes to women rights, Islam has the most rights rights and respect for women. It’s sad to see how we forgot that and follow a trend and funded movements,”

On the contrary, Aurat March clarified the meaning of the slogan as well as their sources of finance, time and time again.

“‘Mera jism meri marzi’ means that women want bodily autonomy and independence. To be able to have the right to choose in matters concerning their bodies. To choose what to wear without fear of rape. To choose who to marry. To choose whether they want to have children, how many, and when they want to have them. To not have their husbands rape them because they feel entitled to their bodies after marriage. To have access to mobility in their day-to-day lives for work and for leisure. To not have their bodies maimed in the name of having their sexuality controlled,”

Twitter Class 101

Ahmed Ali Butt’s criticism of women’s rights movement in Pakistan focuses on how they are borrowed from Western culture rather than home-grown. Netizens stepped in and pointed out how most art is borrowed from the West too.

From music genres like rock and rap. Even film itself is a Western creation. And all this reflects sadly on a person who is who he is today because of his showbiz career.

As for the comparison to the western-inspired ‘My Body, My Choice’ campaign, this movement focuses more on health rights.

Meanwhile ‘Mera Jism Meri Merzi‘ means ‘My Body, My Will.

People called out Ali’s lack of understanding, and his unwillingness to do research. Especially the obliviousness to the fact that women are trafficked and forced into prostitution in Pakistan since a long time before Aurat March was even a thing.

Then there was just plain old fashioned trolling.
