Akcent Flaunts a Pakistani ‘Kurta’ at European Music Festival

The band’s lead singer Adrian Sînă pays homage to the country

Romanian popstar Akcent already has a plethora of fans in Pakistan and his latest antics are only adding to that fanbase. The singer was spotted wearing a kurta at a music festival.

Kurtas are a common clothing item among men and women in South Asia. So what’s so say the singer did indeed sport the traditional look out of love for Pakistani fans? In a Facebook post the Romanian music act’s Adrian Claudiu Sînă confirmed that the kurta was indeed from Pakistan.

Hate to inform him that wearing a kurta over jeans, or slacks has been around for ages. In fact we were pretty much over the trend after the 90s and early 2000s. But Akcent style statement might bring back the trend.

Although women continue to sport kurtis and jeans as indo-western wear, the trend didn’t catch on as much among men but maybe it will now.

However kurtas with pants rather than a shalwar or pajama was huge in the West among the hippie movement during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Even now there are some hilarious instances of cultural appropriationn, while Pakistanis shy away from their national dress. Some even going as far as to bash then Pakistani cricket captain Sarfaraz for wearing shalwar kameez instead of a suit when meeting the Queen of England, Elizabeth II.

The South Asian ‘tunic’ (if I may dare call it that)  has a range of variations. From material and texture to embellishments, based on the occasion. From casual cotton to bedazzled with gotta work, the kurta is a key part of Pakistan’s identity.
