Arooj Aftab and Anoushka Shankar’s ‘Udhero Na’ Nominated for Grammy Award

Her nomination is a resounding clapback at racist western journalists.

Music artist Arooj Aftab is heading to the Grammy Awards once again as her latest song, Udhero Na featuring Anoushka Shankar, has been nominated for the ‘Best Global Performance’ award on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s first Grammy award winner had submitted her new song for consideration to the Grammys last month. However, despite her success, she is still picked on by the western media for being a ‘female Pakistani Muslim‘.

The singer was ecstatic with the news and shared a screenshot of the list of the nominees for the 2023 Grammy Awards taken from The New York Times on her Instagram account. She captioned it, “Oh my oh my oh my,” with the sparkle emojis.

Arooj Aftab is a US-based Pakistani singer, composer, and producer who has been breaking new ground with her soulful tunes. The 37-year-old has steadily been gaining global attention for her work that fuses various genres such as jazz, folk, minimalism, and neo-Sufi.

She has released three albums so far — Bird Under Water (2014), Siren Islands (2018), and Vulture Prince (2021) — and gained even more attention after former US president, Barack Obama, included her song Mohabbat in his 2021 summer favorites list.

This isn’t the Brooklyn-based vocalist’s first Grammy nomination. She won her first Grammy for her song Mohabbat in the same ‘Best Global Performance’ category this April and was nominated for the ‘Best New Artist’ category as well.

The Grammys will take place on 5 February 2023 in Los Angeles. Here’s hoping Arooj Aftab makes history by winning the prestigious award once again. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
