“Avengers” Directors Say They Will Return to Marvel for These Two Reasons

Guess which two properties they want to tackle next?

Russo brothers

After Avengers: Endgame, will the Russo brothers return for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 4? In an interview with SYFYWire, the brothers explained what it would take for them to return to MCU.

The directors revealed what it would take for them to come back. After directing the biggest blockbuster of the year, Joe and Anthony Russo want to take on the X-Men franchise. Since the Disney-Fox merger happened, this is possible.

After directing several MCU installments, the Russo brothers admitted what they now desire is a go at the X-Men or Fantastic Four.

Why X-Men (post-Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, X-men to be specific)? The brothers explained that the ‘X-Men‘ were a big part of their lives when growing up.

“I grew on up [John] Byrne’s X-Men run. Ben Grimm was a favorite character growing up, the Thing. And ‘Fantastic Four‘ is now in the Marvel fold. There’s a lot.”

Joe Russo has a particular liking for the Silver Surfer. Adding that if they return, they want it to be for a series of films, not a stand-alone film.

“Silver Surfer is an amazing character. Going big in cosmic would be a lot of fun. So there’s a lot of things that could attract us.”

Joe said if they were to return, it would be for “a multi-movie arc on the scale of ‘Avengers’” rather than something smaller-scale.

“I think after you go on the journey that we went on – because there is a comprehensive narrative, an overarching story from Winter Soldier all the way to the end of Endgame that involves Tony and Cap, through Civil War, through Infinity War – I think that scale of ambition in storytelling is a bug that’s biting us,”

Basically, what once drove directors away from MCU, i.e. “the decade of commitment,” is now turning into the very reason why the Russo brothers want to return for a franchise.

So what does Disney have to say about this? Lets wait and see.
