It’s so hard to come forward as a victim of sexual harassment.

Ayesha Omar

Ayesha Omar is speaking up about how time shouldn’t wane the credibility of a sexual harassment victim’s story. With all the stigma surrounding harassment and the trauma that follows it, it is difficult to open up about the issue.

The actress cited her own experiences of being sexually harassed and still not being able to tell her story. Ayesha Omar spoke about how she understands how it feels having gone through it but she’s not brave enough to talk about it. Making her relate to the struggle of taking time to come forth.

“I have been through harassment in my career and life, so I understand how it feels. I don’t have the courage to talk about it yet, maybe someday I will. But I can totally relate with everyone who has been through it.”

The Kaaf Kangana actress emphasized the need to base the credibility of a victim’s story based on how long it took them to talk about it.

“There is no particular time for one to open up about it, it can take one 20 years, another only one, while for some it takes two minutes. People can come out whenever,”

In an interview with Ahsan Khan about how important the #MeToo movement and empowering victims.

“This movement is extremely important because it takes a lot for the people who’ve been victims to open up about their experiences. There are so many men and women in our own industry who have been through it.”

The Lahore Se Agay actress then explained how providing excessive projection to victims that come forth empowers other victims to come out with their stories.

“We need more people to come out, even if only the renowned are talked about. The lack of projection for some some, should not be considered as discriminatory towards anyone else’s struggles. It should simply be taken as a means to empower those without mediums by channeling them through those with the means.”

Ayesha Omar affirmed how the movement itself is not harmful despite people trying to exploit its momentum. Adding that most things do end up being exploited, (at least in Pakistan) but that should not allow a movement to be dismissed. It took a lot of brave people to come forth and share their stories to start the movement.

“It is extremely commendable of those who come out with their experiences, making MeToo an extremely brave movement. Even though it may also be exploited, but that doesn’t make the movement  bad. Being exploited is no the movement’s intention. It’s just that, everything ends up being exploited.”
