Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai states that women have the right to choose what they want to wear, whether it’s a burqa or a bikini.
Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the world’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She is known for human rights advocacy, especially the education of women and children in her native Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The 24-year-old is famous for being an outspoken activist when it comes to women’s rights. Recently, she wrote an essay online, “Please stop telling us how to dress.” about the various pressure women face from society when it comes to dressing. Malala took to Instagram to share snippets from her essay, detailing her own struggles and how she spoke against the Taliban that forced women in her community to wear burqas. She also raises awareness about the recent objectification of women in India after Indian authorities force young girls to remove their hijab at schools.
Malala is a strong activist for women everywhere as she believes women have a right to choose what they wear. Her protest is not just restricted to burqas, hijabs, or Islamic dressing.
“Whether a woman chooses a burqa or a bikini, she has the right to decide for herself,” Malala states. “Come and talk to us about individual freedom and autonomy, about preventing harm and violence, about education and emancipation. Do not come with your wardrobe notes.”
