Could Sajal Aly Have Played Rabi Better Than Sehar Khan?

Or Danyal Zafar instead of Shuja Asad?

Looking back at Tan Man Neelo Neel, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing Sonu and Rabi with the same sincerity and depth as Shuja Asad and Sehar Khan.

The two brought the unique characters to life, making viewers laugh, cry, and feel the weight of the drama’s powerful message. However, the two were never the first choice for the dramatic roles.

Recently, Tan Man Neelo Neel director Saife Hassan spilled some behind-the-scenes secrets about how the beloved characters Rabi and Sonu came to life on screen.

In a recent interview, Hassan revealed that superstar Sajal Aly was his first choice to play Rabi. Known for her stellar performances and unmatched versatility, Sajal seemed like the perfect fit for the role. However, her packed schedule became a hurdle. She was so busy with other commitments that at one point, she couldn’t even answer some of our calls, Hassan shared.

With Sajal unable to take on the project, the team began searching for a new Rabi. Enter Sehar Khan, who eventually landed the role and delivered a performance that resonated deeply with audiences. Reflecting on the casting, Hassan remarked,

It’s possible that Sajal might not have been able to do what Sehar did, or if she had, it would have turned into something completely different.

The casting of Sonu, Rabi’s counterpart, was no less dramatic. Initially, the team had their eyes on Danyal Zafar, the younger brother of singer-actor Ali Zafar. “We thought he’d be ideal because he can sing and dance,” Hassan explained.

However, Danyal admitted that while singing was his forte, dancing wasn’t his strong suit. This revelation led the team to reconsider their choice.

The turning point came during a trip to the UK for the HUM Awards. While watching a promo, Hassan stumbled upon Shuja Asad.

Impressed by his performance and encouraged by his manager, Hassan decided to cast him as Sonu. And just like that, Shuja Asad stepped into the role, delivering a breakout performance that left audiences captivated.
