Dalai Lama Apologizes For Telling Young Boy to Suck His Tongue [Video]

The Dalai Lama has come under fire for his inappropriate behavior with a young child. Things took an uncomfortable turn when the Dalai Lama stick out his tongue asked the child to suck on it at an event in the hillside city of Dharamshala.

The incident was captured on camera as it went viral on social media sparking outrage, with some calling it “disturbing” and “inappropriate.”

In response to the backlash, the Dalai Lama’s office released the statement on Monday expressing regret and apologizing for any harm caused. The statement also emphasized that the Dalai Lama meant no harm and was simply engaging in playful behavior.

In the infamous clip, the young boy approached the Nobel Peace Prize winner for a hug. The 87-year-old spiritual leader invited the boy on stage where he playfully asked him to first kiss his cheeks, and then on his lips.

If the boy wasn’t visibly confused and uncomfortable enough, the Dalai Lama told his to suck his tongue, which he had then stuck out.

The Dalai Lama’s office has since issued a statement, which said that he “wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” adding he “regrets” the incident.

The statement tried to defend the Dalai Lama, adding that  “His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras.”

While the Dalai Lama’s apology is a step in the right direction, it is has made people question the 87-year-old’s character. The incident itself is also a reminder that we must all be vigilant about setting appropriate boundaries and ensuring the safety and well-being of children.
