Deepika Padukone Film Chhapaak Accused of Being a Rip Off

The film is in hot waters.

Chhapaak

Chhapaak is an upcoming drama film which stars Deepika Padukone as “Malti“. She will portray real-life survivor Laxmi Agarwal, an acid attack survivor. Laxmi later on became a vocal spokesperson for the rights of acid attack victims.

History of Laxmi Agarwal

Laxi Agarwal, a bright hopeful girl from Delhi, had dreams of becoming an aspiring musician. Tragedy struck as she became victim of an acid attack by Nadeem Khan, a man twice her age (32 years old). She was only 15 years old.

She fell prey to Nadeem’s blinding rage, when she struck down his advances not once, but twice. The gruesome attack took place when she was walking home from her music class and Nadeem threw acid on her in public, leaving a significant portion of her body disfigured.

Laxmi refused to give up, and underwent many surgeries over the span of 10 years to reclaim her life.

She persevered, and became the advocate and founder of Stop Sale Acid. Through her story and efforts, the public called for curbing the sales of acid, with a petition even gathering over 27,000 signatures. The efforts paid off as they caused the Indian Supreme Court to regulate the sale of acid.

Clashes of Scripts

The movie Chhapaak has currently hit a snag, though it’s scheduled to release on January 10, 2020. The film is being taken to court by writer Rakesh Bharti, who is petitioning to be credited as one of the script writers for the film.

Bharti claims that he originally came up with the idea for the script/film known as “Black Day”. And even had it registered with the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association (IMPPA) in February of 2015.

Since then the writer claims he had written the script for this movie and narrated the idea to Fox Star Studio which produced Chhapaak.

He filed several complaints to the producers of the movie, after finding out the similarities between his script and Chhapaak’s. But his cries fell on deaf ears. In hopes for a solution Bharti resorted to receiving justice from the court itself and registered a case with the Bombay High Court.

Bhatti’s advocate Ashok Sarogi has stated that the plea is set to be heard by a vacation bench within the court on December 27.

The movie “Chhapaak” is directed by Meghna Gulzar and is produced by Deepika Padukone.
