Disney Announces ‘The Princess Diaries’ Threequel is in the Works

It is currently unclear if Anne Hathaway is returning as the Queen of Genovia.

After two decades Disney has announced a new installment of our favorite childhood film, The Princess Diaries. It stated that work on part three of the film is underway and it will not be a reboot.

Aadrita Mukerji is penning a script for the threequel that originally starred Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews.

However, there is no word if  Anne Hathway, who played the titular character, will be returning as the Queen of Genovia or if it will be reprised by another actress. According to Variety, someone else may have to step into Mia Thermopolis’s shoes to play the main character.

The actress did recently say that her onscreen grandmother, who was played by Julie Andrews, will return for the new project.

“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” Anne Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight and added, “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work”.

The Princess Diaries is the story of an American teenager who learns she is heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia. Later on, her grandmother helps her learns rule and regulations and how to act like a princess.

Based on Meg Cabot’s series of novels, The Princess Diaries, the first of which was published in 2000, the films starred Julie Andrews as Mia’s grandmother (Queen Clarisse), Mandy Moore as mean cheerleader Lana Thomas, and Sandra Oh as Vice-principal Gupta, and was a box office hit all around the globe.
