Doctor had a little Lamp

Dr. Laeek Khan is a medical practitioner from Uttar Pradesh got duped into buying a magical lamp from two men. Khan met the two men while he was treating a woman whom he thought was their mother. These con artists convinced the doctor that they have a magical ‘baba’ who is a supernatural being inside a lamp.

“Gradually they started telling me about a ‘baba’ (priest) whom they claimed also visited their home. They started brainwashing me and asked me to meet this baba,” Khan was quoted as saying in his complaint to Uttar Pradesh police.

Dr. Khan met this ‘baba’ who seem to perform such supernatural rituals. He was not allowed to touch or take the lamp home as it would cause ‘harm’. However, the men were more accepting when Khan offered to pay, which he did.

Dr. Laeek Khan paid $93,000 for the magical lamp in the hopes that it would bring health, wealth and good fortune – as promised by the two men. Unfortunately, Khan realized later on that the so-called ‘genie’ was actually one of the men in disguise. He filed a complaint to the police who have now arrested the two con-artists.

“The cheats had struck a deal for much more but the doctor had paid about seven million rupees ($93,000),” Amit Rai, a senior officer told a news agency.

He also said that the men were arrested on Thursday and the wife of one of these men was also involved in the fraud. However, she is on the run. He also added:

“The men have also cheated other families using the same modus operandi. The total amount of money involved runs into several million rupees.”
