What Content Will Launch with Disney+?

The service’s library will include Disney properties and assets it acquired from Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox sellout.

If you thought Netflix shouldn’t be worried, here are some of the properties Disney+ will have. That includes the Star Wars franchise, Marvel superhero franchises, and ABC television content.

The whole list of content we can access on Disney+ includes;

  • All Disney classics (Snow WhiteThe Little MermaidPinocchio, The Lion King, etc) even direct to DVD/Blu-ray films
  • 30 seasons of The Simpsons
  • All Stars Wars movies and a spin-off series The Mandalorian
  • The entire collection that comprises Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Disney Studios live-action movies and spin-off shows like High School Musical
  • Disney television series like House of Mouse, Wizards of Waverly Place, Camp Rock, Malcolm in the Middle, etc

This amounts to an estimated 500 movies and around 7,000 television episodes.

Besides big Disney-Fox franchises, Disney+ will include contributions from Pixar and content from Hulu and sports network ESPN.

At their Annual Investors’ Day, Disney Chief Executive, Bob Iger said the streaming service would combine ‘strengths of Disney and the assets acquired from Fox’.

“The Disney+ platform is being built on that foundation; one that no other content or technology company can rival,……….We knew the best approach to the market was to create great content and distribute it in innovative ways. It is that simple.”

There’s Original Content as Well

Disney Studios will also be creating original content for the streaming service. To name a few,

  • Loki series starring Tom Hiddleson

Future of Streaming Services

Disney clearly intends to compete with streaming giant Netflix. When Netflix started creating their own original content, cinematic studios started making plans to move into streaming.

Analyst and Transpire Ventures partner John Meyer believes that Disney plus won’t be a threat to Netflix as the service has strong footing.

“I strongly believe Disney will not become a threat to Netflix whatsoever,…………Netflix now knows what people want more than anybody.”

Last month even Apple announced its’ streaming video plans along with news and game subscription offerings. The tech giant is doing this in efforts to ‘break free of its reliance on iPhone sales’.

The tech giant announced that Apple TV+ service, an on-demand, ad-free subscription service, will launch this year in 100 countries. All this is to cater to an audience that has moved from traditional television to digital content.

2019 will also see the launch of a streaming television service from Warner Media. While Disney+ alone cannot do any damage, the combined impact of all these streaming rivals will make a dent in Netflix’s coffers.

It will be very interesting to see what happens the next year.
