Famous Pakistani Restaurant ‘Khan Saab’ is Now Serving Halal Cuisine in California

Desi cuisine with a twist!

Khan Saab

Khan Saab Desi Craft Kitchen is going to celebrate its inauguration on 19th February 2020; It isn’t your typical Middle Eastern restaurant. This Halal restaurant, situated in downtown Fullerton, serves halal food in an elevated way, to familiarize the Mediterranean Fullerton with a Desi appetite.

The head chef, Chef Imran Ali Mookhi, comes with an abundant experience working at Tantra on Sunset, Tamarind of London in Newport Coast, Dosa, and most recently Tumbi in Santa Monica. He and his sous-chef Mustafa Ansari will take charge of the kitchen; preparing the main dishes and handling the workflow in the kitchen.

Decor

That’s not all, the restaurant also provides a more than suitable ambiance. The 70-seat restaurant was designed by Corona-based Areli Lases and the decor includes a hand-painted mural by Desi artist, Naeem.

The Menu

The menu holds a variety of items like butter chicken, kiwami brisket, sloppy Joe, and Jhinga Masala. This Pakistani, Indian and Afghan fine dining place also includes a $150 Wagyu steak. You heard that right!

Furthermore, consultations on Halal steaks will be provided by Chef Dominic Crisp.

Steak items include woodfired bone-in tomahawk and a boneless ribeye served with sumac mashed potatoes and a veal glace.

From savory dishes to desi desserts, the restaurant has it all; including a non-alcoholic mocktail menu. The mocktails are more carefully planned with names such as Desi Presso, The Bloody Patahni, Ainak Wala Jin & Tonic and Naswari. If the food didn’t make you feel at home, the mocktails might.

The menu is divided into subcategories like:

  • Good for Sharing,
  • Steaks,
  • Kabobs,
  • Curry,
  • Sides
  • Dessert & Mithai.

All these dishes sound mouth-watering and delicious but the smoked beef kabobs are the show-stoppers, according to the head chef.

I call these two dishes the show stoppers. They get smoked in charcoal in the kitchen for 12 hours, and when it comes out, you can taste the smokiness, but there’s no show to it. So we wanted to take the extra step and elevate it.

Mookhi, who spent a Lavish childhood in Pakistan, always found it absurd that Pakistani/Indian dishes could not have a pleasing aesthetic.

I’d go to Italian restaurants and French restaurants and see the food presented so beautifully that you literally don’t want to even touch it. And I’d think, how come Indian food and Pakistani food can’t be that way? It’d drive me nuts.
