2020 was one hell of a roller coaster ride for almost all of us – it has us all hoping that 2021 will be a peaceful, merry-go-round filled with lots of comfort and happiness. Even before the pandemic hit Pakistan, we had already seen some wild controversial debates floating around on the World Wide Web. This year started with the major Khalil-ur-Rehman/ Marvi Sirmed fight and ended with Engin Altan’s meeting with the country’s wanted felon.
Needless to say, the year hasn’t been easy for most, and some have suffered more so than others. But we are glad we made it to the end. Let’s hope the new year will bring us some closure from the toxic relationship we had with 2020. But before we jump into the New Year’s Eve shenanigans, let’s take a look at the top controversial stories that broke the internet:

1) The Uzma Khan Scandal
In May of 2020, we saw the first major controversy pop-up, it was something we had never witnessed before. A Pakistani female celebrity, Uzma Khan, was brutally beaten up by the jealous wife, who accused her of cheating with her husband. Videos of Uzma, getting physically and verbally abused, started making rounds on the internet.
After both the parties made public appeals, 3 versions of story emerged on the internet. The first one revolved around Amna Usman [the abuser] who alleged that the 33-year-old actress was having an affair with her husband, Usman Malik. She also added that the house she “broke and entered” into was in her husband’s name.

On the other hand, Uzma Khan appealed to the police and the government officials to arrest everyone involved in this attack against her. She filed a legal report against Amna and her team. Famous lawyers, Hassan Niazi and Khadija Siddiqi were involved.
The story took a drastic turn when the Pakistani business tycoon Malik Riaz was linked to the controversial story. However, the parties seemed to have made a deal behind the scenes and the case was closed. Netizens are still wondering what happened and why it all ended so abruptly.
2) Host or a wanted felon?
While our year started off ok, towards the end of 2020, we met with another ridiculous controversy. Earlier in October, renowned Turkish star Engin Altan aka Ertugrul visited Pakistan for the first time for a business meeting.
As pictures and videos from his visit started making rounds on social media, several news outlets started digging. After a while, many media outlets reported that Engin’s current host in Pakistan, Kashif Zameer, is a wanted felon. Reportedly, he was wanted for 8 different criminal offenses and was later arrested on fraud charges.
There have been no verified updates on this story since Zameer was released on bail. But his flashy gold jewelry, expensive cars, and million-dollar deal with Engin raise a lot of suspicions. Will this story continue in 2021? We are hoping to find that out soon!
3) Celebrity Break-ups

5) Jalal Sons weds Master Tiles
The grand Jalal Sons and Master Tiles wedding attracted a lot of attention 2 months ago. Famous celebrities like Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Islamic Scholar Tariq Jameel were spotted at the magnificent event.
We were all going crazy at the pictures and videos of this dream wedding that honestly looked like it was from a high-budget movie. But al the attention came crashing down when FBR demanded the parties to justify their expenditures with their annual incomes and taxes.
The grand total for the expenses came to a whopping Rs. 250 million. Naturally, all of us have been left astonished. Will we ever witness such a grand wedding in Pakistan again?
