As the politico-religious group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests blocked streets in Pakistan’s major cities, one fierce woman did what even law enforcement personnel couldn’t do. She cleared the roads for an ambulance
Social activist, Jibran Nasir shared the video of Dr. Bareera Bukhari’s feat on social media. Dr. Bareera Bukhari, was caught up in the traffic in Lahore while rushing a critical patient to the hospital.
The female doctor called out the TLP protesters preventing an ambulance from going through.
“You too will have to go to the hospital someday,” she called out to each TLP supporter standing close to her.
She fiercely stood her ground and continued to film the situation even when the men resorted to threats and attempts to misbehave with her.
“All your might is for women and children,” she shouts at them.
As Jibran Nasir pointed out this young woman had the bravery to stand up to TLP protests when even the State shied away from holding them accountable for public distress.
“Woman speaking in the video is Dr. Bareera Bukhari who stood upto to #TLP goons in Islamabad when she saw an ambulance carrying a critical patient stuck due to their blockade. She got side of the road opened up for ambulance. Courage which our State doesn’t seem to have right now.”
In the end the men at the TLP protests are seen relenting and clearing a path for the ambulance.
Netizens are lauding her courage and prompt action, something that was the government’s responsibility.
However many are concerned for this female doctor’s safety now. Her identity is public and she could be targeted by those who oppose her heroic act.
Dr. Bareera Bukhari is the second woman to emerge as a hero amid TLP protests. Another woman also locked heads with the supporters.
