Game of Thrones Actor Max von Sydow Dies at 90

The iconic actor passes away.

Sad news for movie-goers as popular Swedish-born actor Max von Sydow has passed away. Young fans may remember Max as the ‘Three-eyed Raven’ from the mega-hit series Game of Thrones. The 90-year-old veteran actor died in France on Monday, according to his wife.

The Swedish actor has worked in a lot of major Hollywood productions as well as several classic films by Ingmar Bergman in his long illustrious career.

“It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow” on Sunday, the statement sent to AFP said.

With chiseled features and piercing eyes, Man von Sydow became a very well-known actor in the industry – if not a household name – during an extraordinarily varied career. Most recently he appeared in epic blockbusters such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the hit television series Game of Thrones.

Max’s career began in the early 1950s on the theatre stages of Stockholm and then Malmo, where he met the man who would help forge his career – the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. It was von Sydow’s collaboration with Bergman in art-house films – now seen by many critics as all-time cinema classics – that fans will likely remember from his varied career.

He is remembered for a lot of iconic scenes. Classic film enthusiasts will remember von Sydow as the knight who has a game of chess with Death on a lonely beach from the 1957 classic The Seventh Seal.

He has also appeared on other Bergman films like the The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly as well as the English-language The Touch in which he starred alongside American actor Elliott Gould. One of his final roles was as a stern Russian admiral in Thomas Vinterberg’s 2018 English-language film about the 2000 Kursk Russian submarine disaster.
