Last week a video of an alleged ATM thief in Pakistan went viral, more due to the antics of this thief rather than the crime itself. The whole incident was caught by a CCTV camera, and many netizens laughed and poked fun at the thief, later identified as Salahuddin, for his cavalier attitude. The alleged thief was seen sticking out his tongue at the camera in Rahim Yar Khan at an ATM station.
Little did everyone know what an unfortunate turn Salahuddin’s life would take after that viral clip.
He was arrested by the Punjab police a few days ago. Punjab Police, keeping up with its ‘tradition‘ of brutality, tortured Salahuddin to death. It was learned later on that poor Salahuddin was mentally unstable.
After news of his death spread out on social media, people from all walks of life raised their voices for Salahuddin. People have been demanding justice for the alleged ATM thief who became another victim of police brutality.

Hamza Ali Abbasi also expressed his displeasure over unchecked and deeply horrfying practices of Punjab Police.
Taking to his social media handle, the Pyaare Afzal star lashed out at the government over its dual standards. The actor went on to add that without providing justice to the people, no country can progress.
When small time thieves die in jails because they r poor while big time thieves enjoy five star facilities in jails bcz they r rich/powerful, how can u expect our country to prosper? Without justice, no country can prosper no matter what the economic policies… Its Allah's law. pic.twitter.com/Cxz22U6VQ4

Hamza Ali Abbasi also raised questions following Salahuddinʼs brutal death. Abbasi said whether anyone has been arrested within the police? Or the same old practice of a never-ending inquiry has been initiated?
He was mentally challenged but seemingly physically ok and Punjab Police's cited reason of death of natural causes seems like NON SENSE! Any suspensions in Punjab Police? Any one arrested from within the police? Ya phir bass aik na khatam honay waali INQUIRY? https://t.co/jAn2b57pJP

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased victim has rejected Punjab police’s report that all but absolved their officials of being responsible for the poor person’s death. Salahuddin’s father called for the people responsible for the death of his son to be brought to justice.
The Government of Punjab on the other hand has requested for a judicial inquiry of the incident.

People are also calling out Prime Minister Imran Khan for failing to fulfill his promise of police reforms. The PM had been critical of such incidents in the past but now he is yet to tweet or give a statement on this brutal act of Punjab Police.
