Here’s Why Authorities Should Be Held Accountable Over The Lahore Cinema Video Leaks [Opinion]

What were the authorities thinking?

Pakistani cinema

Just two days ago, videos of couples making out at a local cinema of Lahore started doing the rounds across social media. Apparently, the videos which were recorded through infrared security cameras, were leaked on social media by the cinema authorities presumably.

There are a couple of concerning points to be made about how the incident happened, and how the authorities themselves were more concerned with playing the moral police instead of putting a stop to the whole thing altogether.

There should be no two thoughts about these two things:

  • The couples who indulged in those lewd acts, that too in a public place with children and families around, should have known better.
  • The leaked CCTV footage of couples getting caught in the act is itself a blatant violation of privacy.

Let us break down why this whole thing is justifiably wrong, both on part of the couples and the people who leaked those videos that can easily identify the individuals involved.

Night vision cameras inside a cinema hall?

First of all, the cinema owners should be investigated as to why the infrared security cameras inside the cinema hall were used for the express purpose of public shaming. They are there as a security precaution aren’t they?

Consider this. It is the norm around most modern cinemas where warning signs about these cameras are placed well before people enter these cinemas. Was it done in the case of this cinema in Lahore? We have no reason to believe it was.

We have seen how hidden or spy cameras have been wrongfully used in trial rooms of big shopping malls. No marks for guessing they were used for voyeuristic and perverted aims only.

These videos are then either sold on the internet or used to blackmail people.

Now, the question is, were the hidden infrared cameras installed with any of the above mentioned intentions? If not, then what was the use of it? Even if couple were caught making out, they should have been thrown out of the cinema instead of filming and leaking their footage. This puts a question mark on the acts of the cinema authority regarding this whole controversy.

Violation of privacy is a crime. The owners could be easily tried under Cyber Crime laws. Former Punjab’s Strategic Reforms Unit director general (DG) Salman Sufi has announced to that he will be filling a law suit against the cinema for violation of privacy.

As for the couples who just couldn’t keep their hormones in check, choosing a public place really?

Consensual or Not, There’s A Need to Respect Public Places

We think no one really needs to say this out loud, but cinemas are supposed to be a family-friendly destination. Families and kids just want to go and spend some quality time together.

Even in western countries, people have the good sense not to indulge in explicit sexual acts out in the open. Other than just sharing a kiss, holding hands, hugging and a little bit of PDA. Even the goras know certain things are out of bounds.

Considering the ever growing cases of rape and harassment, do cinemas have to turn into another avenue where someone can’t take their family anymore? Not so long ago, a number of people have been caught by the police making indecent gestures in public places.

So lets think about it with a rational mind. What are your thoughts regarding the whole incident?

  1. its all about how ethically we have deteriorated, the couple should be punished with the cinema owner, who is not aware of how to sit in such public places. ham wo ganjay hain jinko Khuda nai nakhun de diay hain, abb hmari apni he khairnai hmaray hathon. we have not educated our nation rather given them all the tools required to harm themselves.
