India is Hurting Itself with the Bollywood Film Ban in Pakistan and Here’s Why

Talk about a plot twist!

Bollywood decided not to release its films in Pakistan in light of the Pulwama attack.

After Ajay Devgan’s Total Dhamaal and Kriti Sanon and Kartik Aryan starrer Luka Chuppi, the rest of Bollywood jumped the bandwagon to boycott Pakistan.

If Bollywood suspends its release in one of its biggest markets, how will that affect Pakistan? It won’t. However, it will cost Bollywood a lot though.

History has proven time and time again that movies that do well in Pakistan make it big like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Those that don’t, tank at the box office like Pari and Ay Dil Hai Mushkil.

Indian media reported that movies still in the pipeline like Badla and Kesari will also not release in Pakistan.

It will Cost Bollywood a Pretty Penny

Indian media reports that Pakistan only amounts to five percent of earnings. Yet almost all movies that don’t do well in Pakistan bite the dust at the box office.

Initially, Luka Chhupi had been estimated to rein in as many profits as Simmba. Now that it won’t release in Pakistan, things are looking dim for the rom-com.

While the common Indian man may not understand the magnitude of potential losses, Bollywood film-makers do. That is why they are already scrambling to make up for losses from not releasing in Pakistan. They now have to sell those rights to other territories.

“We have to agree that we need to place the country before everything else. So if there is a shortfall in the monies to be recovered from the sale of the films — filmmakers are now re-negotiating with the channels and digital platforms asking for a higher price from the satellite and digital sales of the film because they will not be able to recoup a certain sum of money for films that have already been made and sold for all territories including Pakistan. So, if the Pakistan deal is off, how does the recovery happen?”

Film-makers are also trying to renegotiate deals. They intend to ask for higher prices from distributors they already have agreements with.

We can just imagine Neha Kakkar singing in the background that  ‘is mein tera ghala meri kuch ni jata‘.
