In a strange development, a local magistrate in India started questioning 13 parrots about where they were being smuggled to.

The incident occurred on Thursday in a New Delhi local court. The birds were caught at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport as their smuggling bid to Tashkent by an Uzbek national was foiled. Most of the birds were found in an unconscious state, packed in shoe boxes.

During the investigation, the man identified as Jonov revealed that these are rose-ringed parakeet parrots. He confessed to smuggling the parrots saying that they are very high-demand parrots in Tashkent.

His claims were verified by the Wildlife Inspector and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau.

The Special Public Prosecutor P C Aggarwal confirmed that the export of live parakeets is restricted under the country’s EXIM (export-import) policy. The judge, while ordering the Wildlife Department to take custody of the birds, sent the accused to jail on a 14-day remand. He will be presented before the court on October 30.
