Despite laws to stop the custom of dowry, India still struggles to curb this tradition. A family in Uttar Pradesh was conned into handing over 8 lac INR but the groom never showed up.
The family of an Indian girl was jilted on the wedding days after having paid Indian Rs 8 Lac in dowry. The groom never arrived in Khutahan, Uttar Pradesh.
Police have registered a case against the groom and his family. Circle Officer at Shahganj Police Station, Ajay Kumar stated that a case has been registered on the basis of the young woman’s statement.
The bride said;
“Today, my family has suffered humiliation … The whole family is in a bad state.”

Both the bride and the family told the police that the groom said that he wouldn’t go through with the wedding if they didn’t pay the dowry in advance.
Despite paying the full amount, the groom and his family still did not turn up at the ceremony.
The Wedding Walkout
Ramlochan Singh arranged for his daughter Nidhi Singh to get married to Rohit Singh.
The pre-wedding festivities had already taken place on November 15, 2019, and the wedding date was set for November 19, 2019.
A day before the wedding day, the groom’s family demanded a cash dowry of 8 lacs INR. Ramlochan Singh’s family had asked if they could pay 3 Lac INR but Rohit Singh’s family refused.

They demanded that the 8 Lac INR dowry had to be paid in full otherwise the wedding will not take place.
Left with no option, Ramlochan and his family paid the full amount. When he asked Rohit Singh for an explanation, he refused to give one.
Initially, he said;
“The procession would not arrive on time before putting the phone down.”
That’s when the family approached the police. A police investigation is currently underway.
