Jennifer Lopez set the stage ablaze at the Sundance Film Festival, glittering in a webbed gown and sky-high black heels.
Fighting back tears, the star received a standing ovation at Park City’s Eccles Theatre for her role in Kiss of the Spider Woman. Sharing her joy, J.Lo revealed this project was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez confessed, referencing her childhood love for West Side Story. “My mom would sit me in front of the TV, and I’d be mesmerized. I thought, ‘That’s what I want to do.’ And finally, this man made my dream come true.”
The “man” she praised was director Bill Condon, the musical maestro behind the adaptation. Condon, visibly emotional, said, “I came here 27 years ago, and this experience feels like a full-circle moment. I’ve wanted to make this film my entire life.”
Set in an Argentinian prison during the “Dirty War,” the film follows Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), a queer window dresser who escapes the horrors of imprisonment by weaving tales of his favorite screen diva, played by Jennifer Lopez. Alongside his cellmate, political prisoner Valentin Arregui (Diego Luna), the story explores resilience, escapism, and hope.
With its dazzling musical numbers and timely political undertones, Kiss of the Spider-Woman captivated audiences and industry bigwigs alike. It’s the second adaptation of Manuel Puig’s novel, following the Oscar-winning 1985 version by Héctor Babenco.
Condon used the premiere to underline the film’s deeper themes, quoting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s inauguration remark about gender, which framed the film’s relevance in today’s socio-political landscape. He revealed the film was submitted to Sundance right after Trump’s election victory, sparking debates about its timing.
Currently seeking distribution, Kiss of the Spider Woman has already established itself as one of Sundance’s hottest tickets. As Lopez continues to redefine her artistic legacy, fans can’t wait to see what’s next for the superstar.
