Kumail Nanjiani & Issa Rae Unite For ‘The Lovebirds’ [Video]

This does not look like your average romantic comedy.

The Lovebirds

Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae’s ‘The Lovebirds‘ is not your average rom-com, it’s a murder mystery. Is this something along the lines of Nancy Drew meets Hugh Grant?

The Eternals actor shared the trailer for the film in a tweet.

Issa Rae’s tweet really built up that mystery, captioned;

“Every happy couple has one moment that defines their relationship.”

According to the trailer, it all starts off as a regular rom-com and in the midst of Kumail’s character saying ‘I love you‘, things take a turn for the worst.

The Lovebirds isn’t so lovey-dovey when a ‘mysterious cop’ interrupts them before Issa’s character can say those three words back.

That cop then uses their car with them sitting inside and runs over a cyclist, sucking them into a murder mystery. Yeah, I don’t think he’s really a cop now.

Soon they’re on the lamb, in a dinner role-playing how to turn themselves in, which might mean dying in a ‘police encounter’.

They opt for an alternative choice, to find the killer and clear their names.

In a wild and hilarious ride, they end up getting swept into the corruption of a secret society of powerful people.

An Interracial Love Story?

According to Rae, the movie was initially written with white actors in mind. That would have made this film much like Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s ‘Murder Mystery‘.

Later the filmmakers opted to go for an inter-racial couple.

“It’s not a story about race but we wanted to acknowledge our race and the fact that we’re an interracial couple.”

It’s exciting to see a South Asian and African-American interracial couple. The last time we can recall that distinctly happening was in Mississippi Masala. The film cast Sarita Choudhury as ‘Mina’ and Denzel Washington as ‘Demetrius’.

When Mina’s family moved to the United States as immigrants running away from war, she meets Demetrius. A genuine ‘I’m in love with my best friend’ kind of romance blossoms between the two.

Tragically Mina’s family is opposed to this. Yet despite opposition from both their families over the racial differences, love conquers all.

Directed by Michael Showalter, The Lovebirds cast Kumail Nanjiani, uniting the two on set after they teamed up on The Big Sick. Meanwhile, Issa Rae was last seen in Insecure.

We’re looking forward to seeing her on the cinematic screen.

The Lovebirds release date is April 3rd.
