Lahore Man Throws Petrol On Family, Burns Himself With Them

Appears to be a case of attempted murder-suicide

In a case of murder-suicide, a man tried to kill himself and his whole family in Lahore’s Batapur. Police say the man set himself, his wife and children on fire over an argument.

According to Samaa News, the neighbors helped identify the man as Anees. Neighbors say the couple had an argument in the morning. Amid the verbal feud Anees threw petrol on himself and his family and set everyone ablaze, a neighbor said.

The police were immediately called to the site and the family taken to a hospital. According to doctors, Anees and his wife are in critical condition. The couple has been moved to the burns ward. There is no update on the condition of the children.

Police are collecting evidence from the crime scene and further investigations are underway in the murder-suicide case.

 

The Psychology of Murder-Suicide

Murder-suicide cases are extremely rare and studies show the prevalence of the crime across nations is between 0.2 and 0.3 per 100,000.

Individuals who commit murder-suicide have certain behavioral traits such as poor self-control, history of domestic violence, and a history of chronic, and often untreated depression.

At least 30% of relationships that end in a murder-suicide had a history of domestic abuse in the relationship.

Meanwhile a 2016 study of 60 murder-suicide perpetrators found that 62% had been previously been diagnosed with a mental health issues by mental health professional. Almost all of them were diagnosed with depression. Less than half of them then sought medical treatment from a professional or medical help.
