‘Lot of haram going on’: Ms. Marvel Upsets Fans With Its Representation of Pakistan [Video]

“This isn’t Pakistani representation, it’s a representation of how Bollywood has always perceived and shown Pakistanis to be,” says one fan.

Ms. Marvel receives criticism for its depiction of Pakistan family and culture in an exclusive sneak peak clip.

The latest edition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Ms. Marvel is just days away from its official worldwide premiere. Pakistani awaam is buzzing with excitement for the show that will feature, for the first time, a Pakistani superhero.

Creator Bisha K. Ali’s goal is to showcase the culture of Pakistan to Hollywood and rest of the world. Fans finally got an exclusive sneak peak for the upcoming show, and let’s just say it’s “haram!”

For a show that aims on prompting Pakistani culture, the end results looks more like a Bollywood drama about a “Pakistani family.” The cringey dialogue and thick Indian accent is apparent in the scene. Take a look.

In the clip, Kamala’s mother, Muneeba and Yousuf (both played by Indian actor Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur), talk about her upcoming Halloween party costume. Apparently, Kamala’s mother made matching Hulk-inspired shalwar kameez for Kamala and her father.

The entire scene is something only an Indian would perceive as how Pakistani families talk and interact. Netizens felt the same way after hearing lines like “lot of haram going on” and the abbu’s overly enthusiastic “chak de phattey‘. Here’s how Pakistan fans trolled Ms. Marvel.

“Maybe Homeland was not so bad, janab,” says this guy.

It is too early to judge the show based on this look, hopefully Ms. Marvel can redeem itself with the Pakistan fans. What do you think? Let us know in the comment section below.
